Conservation and natural resource management activities are often faced with the poles of "pro-human" and "pro-environment". WWF-Indonesia tries to harmonize the two, and find the best solutions so that natural resource management can provide fair and long-term benefits for all parties. Working with indigenous peoples and local communities is central to WWF-Indonesia's mission to create a future where people and nature can live and thrive in harmony.

WWF-Indonesia's conservation strategies must be integrated with the wisdom and culture of indigenous peoples and local communities, respect human rights, understand social conditions, and synergize with economic development strategies. We believe that conservation efforts will not succeed if the rights, roles and contributions of communities are not recognized, and communities, both men and women, are not involved in decision-making about conservation and natural resource management.

To be part of an effective and inclusive social-ecological movement, WWF-Indonesia is committed to:

  • Respect and Promote the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities;
  • Respect and promote gender equality and the rights of future generations;
  • Deepening understanding and conservation planning based on consideration of the fulfillment of basik rights in the social, economic, and cultural fields;
  • Maintain and respect the trust given to WWF-Indonesia by indigenous peoples and local communities;
  • Affirming the role of WWF-Indonesia as a pro-active part of civil society in collaboration with other civil society organizations, for the purpose of conservation, equitable natural resource governance and sustainable development;
  • Improve the accountability o its social policies so that every activity and interaction of WWF-Indonesia with indigenous peoples and local communities is based on social and human rights principles.
