MULTI-STAKEHOLDER COLLABORATION SUPPORTS MARINE CONSERVATION IN JEMBRANA, BALI
The ocean is one of the main sources of food for humans, especially in Indonesia which has a sea area of 3.25 million km². For this reason, it is an obligation for us as citizens to play an active role in marine conservation, including the business world. Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison (IOH) together with WWF Indonesia Foundation collaborated with the Bali Provincial Marine Fisheries Service to support marine conservation in Jembrana Regency, Bali. This collaboration was inaugurated in Jembrana, on August 4, 2022, attended by Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries of the Republic of Indonesia, Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardana Sukawati, Deputy Governor of Bali Province, Aditya Bayunanda, Acting CEO of WWF Indonesia and Vikram Sinha, Executive Director of Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison.
Marine conservation programs that will be carried out include; rehabilitation of coral reef habitats with the rock pile method, maintaining mangrove ecosystems, plastic waste management, strengthening the Kurma Asih Turtle Conservation Community Group, and strengthening community livelihoods through fisheries sustainability and marine ecotourism.
On this occasion, the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Wahyu Trenggono expressed the importance of marine conservation areas, "With well-maintained marine conservation areas, carbon sequestration is better so that we (Indonesia) make a very significant contribution to the change (mitigation) of world climate change."
"We are proud to be part of this marine conservation effort. Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison which is a telecommunication service provider also needs to take part in this effort, to prove that regardless of our background, preserving the environment is the responsibility of all parties," said Vikhram Sinha in his speech.
The location of Jembrana Regency, Bali, was chosen in this program because it is a part of the West Bali coast that has very high marine potential with 187.4 Ha of mangrove ecosystem, 418.8 Ha of coral reef cover, and is one of the 14 main turtle nesting sites in Indonesia. In addition, the Jembrana Regency Government is very active in protecting its marine ecosystems, for example in 2013, the Jembrana Regency government has reserved 3,532.52 Ha of its waters to become a conservation area through the Jembrana Regent Decree No. 778 / DKPK / 2013.
Aditya Bayunanda, Acting CEO of WWF Indonesia said, "We invite all parties to play an active role in protecting Indonesia's seas, because a healthy marine ecosystem is the life support of Indonesian people in the future". He continued, "Hopefully with the presence of WWF and fully supported by Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison as well as local communities and partners, it can support the process of accelerating the establishment and increasing the effectiveness of the management of Conservation Areas in the waters of Jembrana Regency, Bali."
The event also saw the release of sea turtle hatchlings represented by 20 participants, the number 20 symbolizing the G20 event being held by the Indonesian Government. At this event, casual talks about marine conservation efforts were also delivered by I Ketut Sudiarta as the Marine and Fisheries Expert for the Governor of Bali Province, Permana Yudiarso as the Head of the Denpasar Coastal and Marine Resources Management Center (BPSPL), Imam Musthofa as the Director of the Marine and Fisheries Program of the WWF Indonesia Foundation, and Steve Saerang from Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison.
Currently, WWF Indonesia Foundation has supported the Indonesian government by assisting 23 marine protected areas throughout Indonesia until they are officially designated by the government. Marine conservation is our common duty to preserve the source of future life.
