PANDA MOBILE EDUCATES DOMBA KECIL KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS ABOUT SUMATRAN ELEPHANTS
By: Anjani Mutter (Volunteer Panda Mobile)
One of the umbrella animals that WWF-Indonesia focuses on is the Sumatran elephant. The number of Sumatran elephant populations that are decreasing from year to year certainly adds to the concern of the extinction of this species. This condition is the background for WWF-Indonesia's Panda Mobile team to raise the theme of Sumatran elephants as educational material that will be given directly in the schools visited by the Panda Mobile team.
One of the educational activities about Sumatran elephants carried out by the Panda Mobile team to schools was at the Little Lamb Kindergarten in Tanjung Duren, West Jakarta last Friday (11/18). A total of 40 students consisting of preschool and kindergarten B students were introduced to various information about Sumatran elephants.
Education about nature and animal conservation is not an easy thing to do. It takes the ability of the right language style so that the message delivered can be well absorbed by these children. WWF-Indonesia's Panda Mobile team created a series of activities that are fun and interactive, yet meaningful.
The first activity was storytelling conducted by Kak Ryan. In accordance with the theme, the Sumatran elephant, Kak Ryan told a story about the elephant's adventures while incorporating information and interesting facts about elephants. All students were very enthusiastic in listening and demonstrating movements in accordance with the story told by Kak Ryan.
The story about the Sumatran elephant was further strengthened by watching an elephant-themed movie. Through the movie, they learned how animals are hunted and the consequences for their ecosystem. After watching the movie about elephants, the students are expected to understand the concept that protecting animals, especially endangered ones, is very important.
Next, Panda Mobile volunteers invited the students to use the water laboratory facilities owned by Panda Mobile. They also explained about the water cycle. A message about the importance of using water as efficiently as possible for daily needs because the amount of clean water continues to decrease from year to year is the main point conveyed to students. The day's activities were closed with a coloring activity so that students could express their creativity.
