SERAYA MARANNU VILLAGE FISHERMEN SUPPLY ECO-FRIENDLY FISH COMMODITIES TO AYANA LABUAN BAJO HOTEL
West Manggarai Regency as one of the regencies in Fisheries Management Areas (WPP) 713 and 573 is considered to have a wealth of fisheries resources that need to be managed properly, namely implementing sustainable fisheries practices. Unsustainable fishing has been identified as the most widespread of all local threats to coral reefs (Burke, 2011). Destructive fishing is any form of fishing effort that has a negative impact on biota populations, and coastal marine ecosystems.
Based on the results of the EAFM assessment, one of the priority recommendations is to develop a Fisheries Improvement Program (FIP). FIP is a fisheries improvement effort that refers to the principles of fisheries target stock status, the impact of fisheries activities on the ecosystem, and management effectiveness (WWF-Indonesia 2012). The commodity of fisheries improvement efforts in West Manggarai Regency is Coral Fisheries. In the implementation of the FIP program, the village assisted by WWF Indonesia and the Department of Food Security and Fisheries (DKPP) of West Manggarai Regency is Seraya Marannu Village located on Seraya Island with the name of the Seafood and Sumber rejeki group.
Both groups are currently categorized as intermediate groups as a result of the 355 assessment conducted by DKPP of West Manggarai District in 2016. The classification of the class assessment includes beginner, intermediate and main classes. The Intermediate class is a higher class than the beginner class, where institutions in this class have carried out planning activities even though they are still limited, with a score limit of 351 - 650. The stratification of group institutional capabilities measured include: Mastery of technology, organization, business scale, capital capability, partnership/collaboration and access to market information.
The FIP development program conducted in Seraya Marannu Village started in 2015 until now with two fishermen groups. The two groups consist of 13 members each, 3 people as administrators and 10 members. These two fishermen groups are the legacy of the fishermen mentoring program of the West Manggarai Food Security and Fisheries Agency (DKPP) in 2014. To foster fishermen in implementing environmentally friendly fishing activities, WWF-Indonesia assisted the groups in the training of Better Management Practices (BMP) of Grouper and Snapper Fisheries and BMP of Shark Bycacth Handling.
On October 25, 2020, an FGD was conducted in Seraya Marannu Village between fishermen, village government officials, fish collectors, Ayana Labuan Bajo Hotel staff, DOCK (Dive Operator Community of Komodo) and WWF-Indonesia. The FGD discussed the fishing process in accordance with BMP (Better Management Practices) Reef Fish to the transactions made by the group, as well as the offer from Ayana Labuan Bajo Hotel to receive environmentally friendly fishery products. The criteria for environmentally friendly products desired by the Ayana Hotel include catches that do not contain signs of fish resulting from environmental damage such as pushers, bombs or the results of compressor fishermen. For example, if the swimming bubble bursts and blood oozes from the vertebrae, this is an early indication of the bomb used to catch the fish. And if the fishing is with cyanide poison with the following signs: The surface of the eyes is slightly gray and blurred, the mucus is excessive so that the skin surface is not as slippery as normal fish, the fins and tail are brittle and fall off, and the gills are pale even though they have just been caught.
"Hopefully in this meeting, in supporting the development of fisheries improvement programs in Seraya Marannu Village can run well". said Mr. Benny, a staff member at the Ayana Labuan Bajo Hotel.
Said Mr. Samansur (Fishermen Group Member in Seraya Marannu Village), "We are organizing to get fishery products that are as fresh as possible and use environmentally friendly tools, namely this fishing rod". With the discussion with all elements of the community in Seraya Marannu Village and Ayana Hotel, information disclosure from the fishing process by fishermen, to the handling of catches, and how the mechanism is so that fishermen's catches can be accepted at star hotels such as Ayana Hotel. Suggestions and feedback have been noted by the group.
On the next occasion, the fisheries group in Seraya Marannu Village had the opportunity to test business transactions from Ayana Hotel Labuan Bajo. The transaction with Ayana Hotel was carried out on October 27, 2020, with a commodity of 5 kg of yellowtail fish, with a transaction value of IDR 150 thousand. There is an additional value which is obtained by fishermen with a difference in price difference with the existing market of around IDR 10,000. One of Ayana Hotel's focus on value addition is to always take more impactful steps in caring for our planet. Committed to introducing a series of ways to preserve the environment and local communities. Hopefully, there will always be a good relationship between fishermen and consumers for the preservation of nature and the benefit of fishermen who practice environmentally friendly fishing.
