ACTION TO SUPPORT THE #DOUBLETIGERS CAMPAIGN
By: Natalia Trita Agnika
July 29th is Global Tiger Day. As one of the countries with tiger populations, we should be involved and take part in the commemoration. The Sumatran tiger (Phantera tigris sumatrae) is one of the last remaining tiger species in the world, living from Aceh to Lampung. The threat to the declining population of Sumatran tigers arises from the reduction of their original habitat in the forests of Sumatra and the high level of poaching and illegal wildlife trade. WWF-Indonesia recorded the deaths of 19 individuals from natural deaths, conflicts with humans and poaching between 2010 and 2014.
The Global Tiger Day commemoration aims to raise public awareness about the importance of protecting and increasing tiger populations in the wild through tiger conservation efforts. All parties are expected to spread the tiger conservation virus through various ways. Even public figures who have a high commitment to nature conservation have contributed their voices through social media with the hashtag #DoubleTigers so that the echo of tiger conservation is increasingly heard.
The #DoubleTigers campaign is a campaign launched by WWF to double the tiger population in the world. You can also voice your call to support tiger conservation with the hashtag #DoubleTigers either in the form of a photo or an inspiring sentence through wwf.id/doubletigers.
Hopefully, more serious efforts to save tigers can be made soon. However, to quote a public figure some time ago through his social media account, "Action speaks louder than a tweet", real actions or actions to help conservation will make the echo of conservation more perfect. You can enhance your support for the #DoubleTigers campaign by adopting a Tiger Papier Mache through wwf.id/donate. Saving tigers by owning and keeping them is the wrong way to go. But having a tiger cub in the form of Papier Mache is a sign that you have donated to the conservation of Sumatran tigers through WWF-Indonesia.
In commemoration of Global Tiger Day this year, WWF-Indonesia also welcomes all those who are moved to be involved in tiger conservation without limiting the amount of donations through crowdfunding platform kitabisa.com/doubletigers. Proceeds from the crowdfunding platform will be used to purchase 10 units of camera traps (camera traps) and installation costs and create environmental education materials for children in Rimbang Baling, Riau (one of the largest population pockets of Sumatran Tigers in Indonesia) in the form of books, infographics about tigers and forests, and educational games for conservation. In addition, the donations were also used to convert a boat into a mobile library that will visit four villages in the Rimbang Baling area. Hundreds of books have been collected from donors so the boat is urgently needed so that the mobile library can soon be enjoyed by children in the four villages.
Your support in the effort to save Sumatran tigers and increase their numbers is needed. What we need to remember, protecting tigers means helping to maintain a healthy forest ecosystem because tigers are umbrella animals.
Let's celebrate this year's Global Tiger Day with real action. What are your actions to save tigers?
