As one of the key upstream actors, independent smallholders often face daily challenges, particularly in adopting sustainable agricultural practices. This context underpins WWF-Indonesia’s efforts to provide technical assistance and capacity building for independent smallholders.

Given their crucial role in the supply chain, it is important for smallholders to understand and implement Best Management Practices (BMPs) in order to optimize yields, improve cost and resource efficiency, and ensure environmental sustainability.

The adoption of these practices is aligned with sustainability standards and certification schemes, which serve as tools to enhance management quality, improve market access, and secure sustainable income.

This combined approach aims to position independent smallholders as key actors capable of addressing the challenges of transitioning toward sustainable production systems.
