Private sector engagement is essential to transforming commodity-driven landscapes, particularly in countries like Indonesia where corporations and small & medium enterprises (SMEs) are driving forces in shaping production, processing, and trade flows. WWF-Indonesia recognizes that long-term conservation outcomes cannot be achieved without influencing market actors who determine sourcing standards, investment decisions, and consumer-facing products.

By working directly with companies at the downstream industry level—such as manufacturers, processors, retailers, and exporters—WWF-Indonesia aims to shift demand toward sustainably sourced commodities. This approach ensures that palm oil, timber, coffee, cocoa, rubber, and other forest-risk commodities are produced without deforestation, ecosystem conversion, or exploitation.

By embedding sustainability into corporate strategy, companies strengthen resilience against climate risks, biodiversity loss, and evolving market regulations. WWF-Indonesia’s engagement therefore serves a dual purpose: advancing conservation and climate goals while enabling the private sector to remain competitive in an increasingly sustainability-driven global economy.

a. Engagements with Companies: Establishing direct partnerships with corporations and SMEs to integrate sustainable sourcing, deforestation and conversion-free commitments, and ESG principles into their business strategies and supply chain operations.

b. Awareness Events on Sustainable Commodities for Companies: Organizing targeted forums and knowledge-sharing sessions to enhance corporate understanding of sustainable commodities, responsible sourcing practices, regulatory trends, and market expectations.

c. Multi-stakeholder Meeting with Suppliers and Downstream Companies: Facilitating dialogue between upstream suppliers and downstream industry actors to align sustainability standards, strengthen traceability, and promote collective action toward deforestation and conversion-free supply chains.

d. Collaboration with Local Governments: Partnering with subnational authorities to harmonize policies, strengthen governance frameworks, and create enabling environments that support sustainable commodities sourcing by businesses and production of sustainable commodity derivative products.
