DISCUSSION ON THE ROLE OF YOUNG PEOPLE TOWARDS NATURAL RESOURCE SUSTAINABILITY
By: Sani Firmansyah
On Saturday (18/03), Panda Mobile WWF-Indonesia was invited by Sinergi Muda, a social organization that empowers and encourages the potential of Indonesian youth to develop and contribute positively in Indonesia. This organization held a discussion with the theme of Natural Resources. Located at the Sinergi Muda Community Secretariat, Panda Mobile WWF-Indonesia, represented by Primayunta as WWF-Indonesia's Supporter Engagement Coordinator, shared information about the current condition of natural resources in Indonesia.
Natural resources are something that exists around our natural environment that can be utilized for various purposes and needs of human life in order to live more prosperously. Natural resources can be found anywhere, such as in the soil, water, land surface, and air. Excessive use of natural resources can affect biodiversity, both in the forest and in the sea and can lead to extinction.< br />
"Today, all humans need natural resources to sustain their daily needs. Ideally, the Earth should provide 1.5 times the amount of natural resources. However, due to the increasing human population, it is estimated that by 2050, we need two Earths so that all human needs are met," said Primayunta.
The discussion was lively. Young people who have various potentials asked several questions related to environmental issues. "What should we do? Because it is impossible for us not to use existing natural resources and of course the use of natural resources will increase," asked Raisha, an Environmental Engineering student from a college in Jakarta.
"Currently WWF-Indonesia is conducting a campaign #BeliYangBaik. People are invited to buy products that have been certified as environmentally friendly. Products that have been certified can be said to be products that have been responsible and produced in accordance with the rules. That way people can also better understand the various impacts that occur on the environment," Primayunta replied.
Supporting the #BeliYangBaik campaign is one way for urban communities to help conservation efforts by purchasing products that are certified environmentally friendly. What people buy and use has an impact on the environment and the animals that live in their habitats.
After Primayunta's presentation, the young people then discussed various problems related to natural resources and thought of solutions. "Today's discussion was interesting. We can help protect natural resources by raising awareness to use environmentally friendly products and use them wisely," said Gaish, an Early Childhood Education (ECE) teacher.
