GETTING TO KNOW CLIMATE CHANGE WITH EARTH PANDA GOES TO SCHOOL
By: Dinda Sora Annisa (Volunteer Bumi Panda)
Although the Bumi Panda building is officially not operating anymore, Bumi Panda's activities are still ongoing by providing environmental education to the public, especially to students in the Bandung area. One example is the Bumi Panda Goes to School activity that took place last Tuesday (17/01). WWF-Indonesia's Bumi Panda team visited Equal Bright School Bandung to deliver messages about climate change.
After introducing WWF-Indonesia, the Bumi Panda volunteers tried to explore the extent of information about climate change that the students already knew. They were divided into two groups and then discussed what climate change is, what causes it, and how to solve it according to their perspective. "We think climate change can be mitigated by planting more trees, protecting them from fire, and using less electricity, which uses a lot of fossil fuels," said Nathan, a Grade 6 student at Equal Bright School.
After that, the volunteers explained about climate change, which began with an explanation of the greenhouse effect and the various causes of climate change as well as solutions that can be provided by WWF-Indonesia. The students listened carefully to every explanation given. They also asked some questions in between the explanations.
Not only presentations and questions and answers, the students were also invited to play and watch movies. One of the movies screened was titled "The Adventure of Banyu". The children looked very happy and occasionally heard laughter when they saw some scenes from the movie, especially when they heard the voice of Ion, one of the characters in the movie. After the movie was over, they were challenged to retell the movie which was then supplemented with explanations by Bumi Panda's volunteers. "It's true what Nathan said. We have to save electricity to avoid climate change," exclaimed Niko, a Grade 6 student at Equal Bright School.
In closing, Bumi Panda's volunteers also provided some information about the environment. "This activity is good and satisfying because the children can enjoy the activities and they can interact well with the brothers (volunteer Bumi Panda) WWF-Indonesia. (The material) is then very interactive because it uses animated videos that can help children capture the explanation more easily," said Jessica, Equal Bright School teacher about Bumi Panda team's visit to her school.
