CORAL 3.0: MILLENNIALS AND ECOLABELED PRODUCT TRENDS
Preserving marine resources is a must for Indonesia as a maritime country. One method that can be done is to apply the ecolabel principle to marine resource utilization activities. However, this principle is not widely known by most Indonesians, so it is necessary to educate the early understanding of ecolabeling. This knowledge of ecolabeling should be a principle that is known by many parties, especially by the younger generation who belong to environmentalist communities.
Marine Buddies Jakarta initiated activities in the form of talk shows and sharing in a series of CORAL 3.0 activities. A series of talkshow, sharing, and discussion activities in CORAL 3.0 activities are expected to open the insights of the millennial generation. Millennials who are active in social interactions in the community are expected to increase the dissemination of information and awareness of environmental issues, so that they have great potential to realize sustainable aquatic resources.
This activity was attended by 70 participants from 28 organizations and communities concerned with the environment, especially coastal and marine, including Divers Clean Action, Kemangteer Jakarta, Greenpeace Indonesia, Seasoldier, FoPMI, WCS Indonesia Programme, Backpacker Jakarta and other organizations. This activity was held at the National University in Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta on Saturday, July 13, 2019.
The ecolabeling talk show was delivered by Febrina Berlianti as Seafood Market Innovation Coordinator WWF-Indonesia. The talkshow material includes various kinds of ecolabel certifications such as MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) and ASC (Aquaculture Stewardship Council), examples of ecolabel products, and characteristics of ecolabel products. In addition, the standards and criteria for catchable species that must be considered by consumers and producers of aquaculture and capture fisheries products were also introduced. One example is the size of tuna that can be caught and distributed to meet the community's fish needs.
"What we can do to support traceability is by asking the seller or producer for information on the origin of the fish and its fishing gear," he said. Through this message, it is hoped that we can encourage producers to make improvements to fisheries practices.
Next, the sharing and discussion session of the marine community was moderated by the Coordinator of Marine Buddies Jakarta, Firli Rahman. The discussion material refers to one big goal, namely increasing awareness of a more environmentally friendly lifestyle. This can be realized by us getting used to buying durable, buying local, buying ecolabeled, buying necessary, buying natural and must start thinking about where to take the waste we have as the campaign echoed by WWF-Indonesia through the #BeliYangBaik Campaign.
"We believe that this step must be started by the millennial generation, because we #MillennialPunyaDampak!" that was conveyed by Firli Rahman as well as the jargon of the CORAL 3.0 activity.
