WENANAM: COLLABORATIVE ACTION TO PLANT TREES FOR THE EARTH
The atmosphere of the former coffee plantation, in Cibulao Village, Puncak, Bogor, which was hit by landslides two months ago, was crowded with people on Friday, May 30, 2025. This time, it was not only farmers who were present, but dozens of volunteers, some of whom brought their shovels, as well as several influencers and government officials. They were there to participate in the tree planting action with young activist and content creator Jerhemy Owen during the Wenanam activity.
Around 9:30 am, Owen led the group down the steep planting area. Carefully, the participants followed Owen's lead, looking for an empty hole - prepared by the farmer a few days earlier - in which to plant resin, pine, bamboo, mango, coffee, jackfruit, or avocado. When almost all the participants are in position, Owen begins the action by inserting a resin seedling into the ground. Owen's gesture was a marker for all participants to start planting. "I hope we don't plant this once, but many times," said Owen, hopefully.
Wenanam is a tree planting movement started by Jerhemy Owen, a creator with over 4.7 million followers on TikTok. The idea stemmed from Owen's desire to commemorate Earth Day, which falls close to his birthday in April. To make it happen, Owen collaborated with the WWF Indonesia Foundation (WWF-Indonesia), which led him to meet with the Cibulao Forest Farmers Group (KTH), a land manager in the upper reaches of the Ciliwung River.
From here, Owen understood the importance of protecting the upstream area of the Ciliwung, which is a water catchment area. If the forest cover in this area is well maintained, then the positive impact will be felt to the cities through which the Ciliwung River flows downstream. In addition, preserving the upper reaches of the Ciliwung ensures that the rich biodiversity within is also preserved.
As a content creator, Owen has his own way of spreading the Wenanam campaign. He makes videos and invites his followers to share the content. In his narration, Owen said he would plant one tree for every 15 times the video was shared. Owen aims to plant 5,000 trees from this action. "It's been 75,000 shares in 6-7 hours (after the video was uploaded). I'm surprised and proud," he said.
Realizing his target had been exceeded, Owen set a new number as his action goal. He wants to be able to plant 10,000 trees in this campaign. This enthusiasm was welcomed by WWF-Indonesia and the KTH Cibulao team, who were ready to provide the planting land. Furthermore, the collaborators involved in Wenanam planning set the first step of planting the first 1,000 trees on May 30, 2025, and 9,000 trees will be planted by KTH Cibulao.
"This is an important movement to inspire everyone that even the smallest movement to save the environment has a good impact on the Earth, for example, something as simple as planting a tree," said Dewi Lestari Yani Rizki, Conservation Director of WWF-Indonesia.
Followers who shared the Wenanam video were also present in Cibulao. She said she had planted at least 10 coffee, jackfruit, and mango tree seedlings. From this experience, Iva saw and learned how Cibulao farmers were involved in a tree planting action by providing seeds and planting areas. "I am from the Agricultural Community Development study program, go down to the community every week to help farmers," she said.
This widespread Wenanam campaign also received the attention of the Ministry of Forestry. Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni, who was also present that day in Cibulao, conveyed the message that forests are entrusted to our children and grandchildren, who must be protected. He then introduced the ABG (Take Free Seeds) program. "People who have 1 KTP can take 25 seeds. Wherever it is, we can provide planting seeds," he said.
In addition to the Ministry of Forestry, the action was also supported by Jejakin, a technology company focused on providing solutions for climate change. After Owen and Minister Raja Juli finished planting the first tree of the day, the Jejakin team immediately demonstrated a device that measures tree diameter and height, and sensors that detect air and soil quality. Later, all the data will be collected in one app to see the impact of the planting program. "Planting trees is one thing. Maintaining and caring for them, as well as measuring their impact, is the next thing to do," explained Jejakin's Founder & CEO, Arfan Arlanda.
According to Harry Purnomo, Vice President of Corporate Communication and CSR of PT PLN Nusantara Power, the reason why PLN NP contributes to the Wenanam action is the commitment to energy transition and the environment as part of the PLN Group. Furthermore, Harry expressed his view that the movement started by Owen represents the voice of future generations. "Big changes always start with small steps that are consistent and sincere. Like what Owen is doing and supported by WWF-Indonesia," he said.
Similar to Harry, VP Corporate Acquisition J-trust Bank, Etsa, also appreciated the steps of young people who havea great concern for the environment. "It means they can utilize their time, energy, and followers for real and positive action," he said. She hopes that activities and collaborations like this can be sustainable. "So that we can ensure that the Earth we live in can recover and is good for all living things that live in it," he concluded.
